Teeth ‘N’ Smiles Review – Duke of York’s Theatre

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What’s it about?
Set in the 1960s, Teeth ‘N’ Smiles is a play with original music that follows a university rock band navigating the highs and lows of life on stage, offering a backstage glimpse into British pop culture and band dynamics.

What we loved best
A super talented cast across the board—true triple-threat actors, singers and musicians—delivering excellent performances that feel both authentic and immediate. Special shout out to Self Esteem (Rebecca Lucy Taylor) and her electrifying performance as Maggie.

When the band plays, it’s like you are at an actual gig—raw, loud and fully immersive. You can feel it under your feet, heightened by bright lights and strong sound design.

The score, with music by Nick Bicât, lyrics by Tony Bicât, and additional new music and lyrics by Rebecca Lucy Taylor, is wonderful. The placement and choice of songs is perfect and well balanced.

One unexpected performer in a brief pre-interval moment is genuinely inspired and unlike anything you typically see on stage.

Anything we’d change
It takes a little while to find its rhythm, but once it does, it fully pulls you in.

Who would enjoy it
Those interested in British pop culture, biographical works, plays with music, and fans of Self Esteem. Also, a strong pick if you liked Stereophonic for its backstage perspective on life in a band.

Who created it
