The Phantom of the Opera Review (Revisited) - His Majesty's Theatre

A timeless West End classic that still delivers pure theatrical magic nearly four decades on.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What’s it about?

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical The Phantom of the Opera continues its historic West End run at His Majesty's Theatre — the very theatre where it first opened almost 40 years ago. Set beneath the Paris Opera House, the story follows the mysterious Phantom, his obsession with young soprano Christine Daaé, and the love triangle that unfolds with Raoul.

What we loved best

It was wonderful to revisit this legendary production in the theatre where it all began. Despite its age, the production still feels remarkably ahead of its time and continues to hold up beautifully.

The opening of the show remains absolute theatrical genius. As the overture kicks in and the chandelier sweeps dramatically over the audience’s heads, it creates one of the most magical moments in musical theatre.

What makes Phantom so enduring is its perfect blend of spectacle, comedy and emotional heart. Beneath the grandeur is a deeply human story, and this cast delivers it with warmth and sincerity.

The current company is exceptionally strong. The performance we saw featured Ashley Gilmour as a wonderfully dashing Raoul, Colleen Rose Curran as Christine, singing beautifully throughout, and Dean Chisnall’s tender and vulnerable Phantom.

Anything we’d change?

With new interpretations of Phantom appearing around the world — from immersive productions to spectacular versions staged on water — this original West End production is still absolutely worth seeing.

Who would enjoy this?

Both first-time theatre-goers and long-time fans of the show. If you’ve never experienced the chandelier moment live, it remains one of the great West End theatrical moments.

Verdict

The standing ovation at the curtain call said it all. Decades after opening, The Phantom of the Opera remains one of the defining experiences of the West End. A timeless production that still delivers pure theatrical magic.
